Self Description:

Advisory Service for Squatters (ASS) is an unpaid collective of workers who have been running a daily advice service for squatters and homeless people since 1975. It grew out of the former Family Squatters Advisory Service, which was founded in the late 1960s. ASS publishes Squatters Handbook, the eleventh edition of which is just out, and has sold in excess of 150,000 copies since 1976. ("about ASS" from advisory service for squatters website)

Modes of Social Change Advocated:

Construction of alternatives aimed at challenging the concept of private property and the ownership of 'space.'

Favorite Theorists:

None are really mentioned, ass tends to be self referential.

Who is the Enemy:

Gentrification, housing councils, unfair laws regarding housing, etc.

Media Used:

ASS publishes books and uses the internet quite effectively to provide resources for squatters. They have 'the best parts' of Squatting: the real story scanned and archived at : http://www.squat.freeserve.co.uk/story/index.htm , and put out the suatters handbook . they also have a new phone line set up.

Tactics:

ASS provides a wide range of legal advice for squatters and social centres. they work on caselaw and sending legal notices to the 'bad guys', and in general aim to arm squatters etc with full knowledge of their legal position. they also run workshops and conferences.

Examples of Action:

Not really elaborated on the site, the main actions seem to consist of the publications put ot by ass and their presence on the web as a resource.

Affiliations:

Homeless.org
Shelter

Radical Dairy

Points of Interest:

ASS are part of a long history of housing and homelessness awareness raising in the U.K. they are well connected and well respected, and very interesting to boot.
