Locus of Activity:

Cyberspace primarily, though they also encourage ‘real world’ projects of poetic terrorism.

Self Description:

The core aim of ®TMark is to call attention to the iniquity of the legal rights that corporations have arrogated over the years in the United States and (now increasingly) around the world. Since 1886, corporations have been legally defined as "persons" in the US, which gives them wide protection under the Constitution, without incurring the same liability as other "people." ®TMark's charter is to popularize these problems and, especially, to focus anti-corporate sentiment and activism; all that contributes to this "bottom line" is seen as beneficial.

We do this both directly--by discussing the issues--and indirectly--by embodying corporate behavior in many of its manifestations. For the most part, we have chosen these methods because they've proven effective--corporations use the publicity techniques that they do because they work--but at the same time, we hope to draw attention to the way corporations act within our society... and outside it. Modes of Social Change Advocated:

Disruption, dissemination of disinformation and the creation of alternatives.

Favorite Theorists:

Paul Virilio, Jean Baudrillard and other ‘cyber’ theorists have an influence.

Who is the Enemy:

Big corporations and government, advertising, mass media, pop culture.

Media Used:

Internet, though many of their funded projects lead to different types of media.

Tactics:

Non-violent, non-branded tactics primarily aimed at disrupting the political and consumer culture through acts of detournement and poetic terrorism. ®TMark uses a diverse array of really interesting tactics in order to engage in acts of poetic terrorism: Within their main website is a list of projects and corresponding ‘mutual funds’ where individuals can contribute money and labour to disruptive acts.

Here’s a few examples: "Create 'prêt a revolter' clothing for protesters. The clothing should be colorful fashions which look funny for the media but have functional protection against police baton blows, and miniature video cameras to transmit footage of police attacks." "Grab some spiffy blue vests and start straightening up the isles at your local Wal-Mart (or other megastore). Aggressively help customers by pushing their carts for them, selecting products for them, and telling them the dangers of shopping without such assistance." (taken from the Mutual Funds section)

However, this group is most notorious for buying up identifiable domain names—for example www.gatt.org or www.GWBush.com—and create ‘dummy sites’ that spread disinformation (or rather ‘information’) about the targeted groups.

Examples of Action:

Some of the ‘dummy’ websites they have set up include:

http://www.gatt.org (for the WTO)

http://www.GWBush.com (for George W. Bush) as well as a parody site of the DOW chemical company.

Affiliations:

Zapatista Floodnet, Electronic Disturbance Theatre, Barbie Liberation Organization, Negativland.

Points of Interest:

The ®TMark site is real interesting, but one wonder how many of their projects are ‘real’ or actual hoaxes. Still, that’s probably what they want their audience to question. There’s no doubt, however, that the setting up of ‘dummy’ websites is an excellent tool in which to spread disinformation.
