Billboard Liberation

Short Description:

Although billboard liberation has a long history, it has, in the last ten years or so, become one of a set of practices associated with culture jamming. In a world where the most powerful and pervasive set of messages we are exposed to come in the form of advertising, billboard liberation attempts to harness the power of the advertising form and substitute a different content for that intended to sell products. The liberation of billboards frequently involves replacing sections of the advertisement with pre-prepared alternate sections. The end result is usually a critique of the advertising message itself or of the problematic effects of the product.
